On July 1, 1984, 14-year-old Nancy Scamurra vanished from her home in Amherst, NY. She was last seen by her father as he left the home to run some errands. There were no signs of a confrontation, and her money, keys and other personal items remained in the home. Nancy’s parents contacted law enforcement and the national Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for assistance.
Earlier this year the Medical Examiner in Onandaga County, NY, acting on information from the NCMEC, noticed the description of Nancy was similar to an unsolved case from 1984. In that case, a headless female torso was found in Lake Ontario, near Oswego, NY. The body had been found thirteen days after Nancy’s disappearance. The ME obtained DNA from Nancy’s family. It was discovered that Nancy had a rare bone disorder that was similar to the body found in the lake.
The DNA samples from the found body and Nancy’s family were examined by the FBI. On July 20, 2012, NCMEC received confirmation from the Amherst Police that the remains found in Lake Ontario were a positive match to Nancy.
We tell you this story to highlight the fact that you can truly never give up; never lose hope. This story also highlights the work done by the NCMEC. Check out their website to learn more about their work (www.missingkids.com)
